My style of photography is mostly storytelling...or photojournalism. I like my photos to tell a story. Most of the time that means I take a series of photos to tell the story that I want to tell. The simpler the photo or series of photos, the easier it is for the viewer to "read" the story. The viewer doesn't have to guess about what I'm trying to say with my photo because I am trying to lead him into the story by the composition and focus of each picture. (Hopefully)
The above photo doesn't really tell the full story that I'm trying to tell, but it adds interest to the below photos, even though the picture is very, very simple. It is a little detail that is part of the story.
This photo (above) tells a little more of the story, and if you add it to the first picture, then you will see that she is playing some sort of board game with someone and she's afraid something bad is going to happen. (Actually she was pleading for mercy from her father.)
The third photo lets the viewer into a little more of the story. Here, the camera is closely focused on the two girls playing a board game. I used the "rule of thirds" to draw interest to the hands and the board game. There a few things in the background that may be a little distracting, but the camera is focused on the game and the girls and so the viewer's eye tends to be focused on the same thing.
This last photo includes the whole picture of all the players and what they are doing. This photo is rather boring and uninteresting by itself (plus, I think the background is a little distracting), but when I put them all together, they tell a fun story of three people playing a board game together, intensely involved.
PS. Nobody is looking at the camera because after I took the first 10 photos, they became more interested in the game than in me constantly taking pictures. That's exactly where I want to be...a fly on the wall that nobody notices anymore. I actually took about 25 photos of this little slice of life. These 4 tell the best story.
